Donald Duke’s SDP Parts Ways CUPP

Ahead of the 2019 elections, the Social Democratic Party, under whose auspices Donald Duke will be vying for the office of the president of Nigeria, come 2019 elections has parted way with CUPP. CUPP is an acronym for Coalition of United Political Parties. This Coalition has over 40 opposition parties under its umbrella. The reason for the coalition is to put forth one person as a presidential candidate in order to increase their chances of getting into power.

SDP was formerly a part of the coalition, however, in Abuja on Tuesday, the publicity secretary Alpha Mohammed announced that the party had pulled out of the coalition and will be starting their campaign on December 19. He said: ”SDP pulls out of CUPP, kick-starts campaign on 19th December…: Details later”. This was the statement, short and straight to the point.

This is coming against the backdrop of the CUPP saying it has adopted the PDP presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate.

SDP distanced itself from the declaration. So withdrawing from the coalition and starting its political campaign is the natural next step to take.
